About Lealholm
Lealholm is a lovely village to walk around and enjoy and if you happen to have some spare bread with you, the ducks of the village will be only too pleased to see you!!!!!!!!
The village originated at the first convenient crossing point on the River Esk downstream from the deep ravine of Crunkly Ghyll where the Esk cuts through the glacial ice dam above Lealholm
Over the centuries the village has supported many trades including iron smelting and milling. The ready supply of water meant that Lealholm was ideally suited to milling operations. The water from the mill race running around the cricket field powered a corn mill and a paper mill .
In the 19th century Lealholm was a largely self-sufficient farming community with its own blacksmiths, cobblers, butchers and other tradespeople and artisans. Today, Lealholm's character is still essentially agricultural, celebrated in style at the annual Lealholm Show, held on the first Saturday in September.
There are number of places of interest around the village including 2 churches, Wesleyan chapel, the War Memorial, water fountains, the Shepherds Hall and the previously mentioned stepping stones.
Apart from The Village Shop and Beck View Tearoom there is Poets Cottage plant nursery so called because John Castillo 'The Bard of the Dales' was born nearby. With craft shops, the Board Inn, Stepping Stones Bakery, The Shepherds Hall, and Lealholm Post Office and Petrol Station along with the beautiful scenery there is plenty to see and do in Lealholm
